OrBEAGLE: Integrating Orthography into a Holographic Model of the Lexicon
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many measures of human verbal behavior deal primarily with semantics (e.g., associative priming, semantic priming). Other measures are tied more closely to orthography (e.g., lexical decision time, visual word-form priming). Semantics and orthography are thus often studied and modeled separately. However, given that concepts must be built upon a foundation of percepts, it seems desirable that models of the human lexicon should mirror this structure. Using a holographic, distributed representation of visual word-forms in BEAGLE [12], a corpustrained model of semantics and word order, we show that free association data is better explained with the addition of orthographic information. However, we find that orthography plays a minor role in accounting for cue-target strengths in free association data. Thus, it seems that free association is primarily conceptual, relying more on semantic context and word order than word form information.

Mental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of a Software System for Detecting Orthographical or Morphological Errors in Persian Words
This paper presents a new method for analyzing words in the Persian language context to find orthographical and structural errors regardless of the meaning. This technique tokenizes each word in a statement then tries to detect the kind of word, and analyses its correctness in terms of orthography and morphology by means of a lexicon. It should be noted that some words in the Persian language h...
متن کاملMultilingual Conceptual Access to Lexicon based on Shared Orthography: An ontology-driven study of Chinese and Japanese
In this paper we propose a model for conceptual access to multilingual lexicon based on shared orthography. Our proposal relies crucially on two facts: That both Chinese and Japanese conventionally use Chinese orthography in their respective writing systems, and that the Chinese orthography is anchored on a system of radical parts which encodes basic concepts. Each orthographic unit, called han...

This paper explores the relative contributions made by orthography, syllabic segment, and lexical tone in the word recognition and retrieval process. It also challenges recent assumptions regarding the role of orthography and tones in mental lexicon architecture. Using an implicit priming paradigm, a word recognition experiment was conducted with native speakers of two tonal languages, Chinese ...
